How do I coonect my TV’s digital audio output to my analog speakers?

I bought a D-to-A converter so that I can plug one end into the (plasma) tv’s digital (optical) audio output and the other end into my 10 year old analog speakers. I get no sound at all. Do I need an amplifier of some sort? I am trying to do this without buying a receiver or dvd / blue-ray player. Thanks.
